The 2017 5 Series

The 2017 BMW 5 Series is now on its seventh iteration as one of the best midsize luxury sedans in the world. But this time around, it isn't just a handsome car, it's also a luxury sports sedan that BMW stuffed full of performance. They took many of the sedan's underpinnings from the sportier 3 Series and added in the luxury features from the larger 7 Series luxury cruiser. This mix of sport and BMW luxury in the 2017 5 Series makes it easily one of the best cars out there for those people looking for that luxury and sport sweet spot in their next car purchase.

Performance and Luxury Combined

BMW's first new additions to the new 5 Series were to opt for a pair of turbocharged engines under the hood. They installed a 2.0-liter twin-turbocharged four-cylinder in the 530i, making 248-hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The larger 540i gets the even larger 3.0-liter twin-turbo I6 that delivers 335-hp and 332 lb-ft of torque.

These two powertrains are paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission and standard rear-wheel drive. BMW's excellent AWD system xDrive is available for an upgrade in both the 530i and 540i.

Making these powerplants really shine is the decision to lessen the overall curb weight of the 2017 5 Series. BMW opted for the use of some weight-saving materials in various areas of the vehicle's makeup, such as an aluminum trunklid, roof, and doors which brings the car's weight down to about 137 pounds.

Visually, the new 2017 5 Series is much more athletic and lean than previous versions. The adaptive LED headlights are new and stretch to longer in order to touch the twin-kidney grille. Aerodynamic-enhancing automatic shutters are installed behind them, and the taillights are larger, contain LED elements, and wrap around onto the fenders. BMW's M Sport package is available as well, and includes a revised front-end complete with larger air intakes, new rocker panels, and trapezoidal exhaust outlets that poke out from a lower rear fascia styled to suggest a diffuser. The M Sport package also gets aluminum pedals, an M Sport steering wheel, and optional black leather with blue contrast stitching inside.

BMW also updated the tech inside as well. The gesture control is a neat new feature, as is the combination of analog and digital functions in the instrument panel. There's also the 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and a larger, full color heads-up-display, that features turn-by-turn navigation, speed limits noted in the bottom corner, and current speed and gear display.
