2017 BMW X5

The 2017 BMW X5 is one of the original luxury SUVs to hit the market, and, just like the outstanding 3 Series, is the benchmark other luxury crossovers shoot for. Which means for each additional update to the X5, the BMW engineers take a lot of time and effort to make sure they keep that leading position.

Considered one of the sportiest in the luxury SUVs on the roads, the X5 has equal parts off-road and on-road capabilities. BMW also made sure to not forget the typical BMW luxury inherent in one of its vehicles by keeping the interior style relevant, fresh, and comforting.

New for 2017 but Not New for BMW

New features in 2017 include the 5.0 version of the iDrive infotainment system, the Luxury package (formerly called the Luxury Line) is now a no-cost alternative to the xLine, and wireless charging and a Wi-Fi hotspot added to the Premium package.

The 2017 BMW X5 seats up to seven, and has an optional third row - which is quite small for full-size humans, but just right for smaller ones. Cargo space is measured at 23 cubic feet with the seats up and 66 with them down.

Mechanically under the hood, the 2017 BMW X5 gets a few engine options for this time around. The first is a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6 in the base X5, which gets 300-hp and 300 lb-ft of torque. It comes in either rear- or all-wheel-drive configurations.

The second is a plug-in hybrid, the xDrive40e has a 2.0-liter turbo-4 to batteries for a net output of 308 hp. This competent green SUV has an EPA estimated combined rating of 58 mpge.

Last is the large 4.4-liter turbocharged V-8 that generates 445-hp. It's an expansive engine in a relatively small vehicle, but might be a necessity for those off-road, BMW enthusiasts.

Standard features for the 2017 X5 retain typical BMW touches as well. These include: automatic stop/start, a dynamics-control button, panoramic two-piece glass roof with sliding feature, iDrive infotainment system with on-board computer, touchpad controller, hard drive-based voice-activated navigation system with real-time traffic, 3D maps, a 10.2-inch high-res screen, 20GB storage for digital audio files, Web connectivity, BMW ConnectedDrive, USB and Bluetooth connectivity, and a power rear hatch.

All in all, the 2017 BMW X5 builds nicely on what previous generations have accomplished, and this new crossover is certainly set to retain that 'top-of-the-heap' title as a segment leader when it comes to all the luxury SUVs currently on the roads.
